A boat without a licence: what it really means
In Italy you can drive without a boating licence only within certain limits: modest engine power, within six miles of the coast, in daylight. That means small, slow boats, which along the Argentario coast struggle to reach the finest coves and don't cope well if the wind picks up. The "do it yourself" freedom is there, but with tight boundaries.
The rest is on you: reading the weather, choosing where to anchor, handling mooring and safety on board. If you know the sea, fine; if it's your first time, much of the day goes on worrying.
With a skipper: he knows the coast

How to choose
If you have sea experience, want a small boat and to potter about near the shore, going without a licence makes sense.
