Anyone travelling with a dog knows the real question isn't "can I bring him", but "where can he actually be". On the Argentario the answer changes from beach to beach, and in high summer it changes hour by hour too. Here's some order, and why for a dog the boat is often the simplest answer.
Beaches on land: rules that change
On the promontory the rules for dogs depend on the stretch of coast and on the town's ordinances, which get stricter in high season. In general free beaches are more permissive than the lidos, where dogs are often limited or not allowed. Before heading down, it's always worth checking the signs at the entrance.
Two reference points for dog owners:
- The Feniglia pine forest: the reserve between Porto Ercole and Ansedonia is a shaded walk seven kilometres long, ideal for a dog in the hot hours. Dogs must be on the lead, it's a protected area.
- La Giannella: the long tombolo on the other side has stretches of free beach with room for a dog, especially away from the lidos.
The limit stays the same: scorching sand to cross, crowds, little shade at midday. For a dog, in August, that's no small thing.
Why a dog is better off on the boat
From the boat the question of rules doesn't arise, and the three worst nuisances for a dog disappear too: the crowd, the burning sand and the distance from the water.
- no crush: the coves we reach by sea are often empty;
- no scorching sand: from the boat you step straight into the water;
- shade on board, under the T-top, and fresh water with a bowl always ready.
The dog lies in the shade, cools off when he wants, and you don't spend the day checking signs and sideways looks. The promontory's more sheltered inlets, calm even in wind, are the most comfortable for him.

What to bring for your dog
